Non-Muslims Should Allow Muslims To Call NPP’s Samira Bawumia To Order – Socio-Political Populism Is Getting Into Her Head

The wife of the Vice President of Ghana, Samira Bawumia, is a decent and beautiful lady, but it appears the seeming showering of praises and admiration from sections of the public, is making her over look few sensitive issues.

Samira Bawumia attended the Ghana @ 60 celebration on 6th March, 2017, with a dress which in the opinion of some Muslims (on social media), is not appropriate of a Muslim woman. Their concerns have been watered down by many who are not Muslims, believe, or follow the Islamic precepts.

The agitated Muslim youth quotes a portion of the Hadith that states emphatically: “Tell the believing men that they shall subdue their eyes (and not stare at the women), and to maintain their chastity. This is purer for them. God is fully Cognizant of everything they do.

“And tell the believing women to subdue their eyes, and maintain their chastity. They shall not reveal any parts of their bodies, except that which is necessary. They shall cover their chests, and shall not relax this code in the presence of other than their husbands, their fathers, the fathers of their husbands, their sons, the sons of their husbands, their brothers, the sons of their brothers.

“They shall not strike their feet when they walk in order to shake and reveal certain details of their bodies. All of you shall repent to God, O you believers, that you may succeed – (24:30-31).”

According to the Hadith, the face of an Islamic woman, in some extreme instances just her eyes and her hands from her finger tips to her wrist, are the only permitted places to be bared in public– aside those, it is not permitted for her to show (in public) any other part of her body to any man who is her potential husband; whether Muslim or non-Muslim.

The above is a doctrine every Muslim woman –irrespective of who you are or where you practice the faith, must oblige – and Samira Bawumia is not exempted simply because she is the wife of the Vice President or is a public figure.

Those who think the worried Muslims who are calling Samira to order are ‘noise makers’ or making mountains out of molehills are simply looking at the issue from their happy-go-lucky perspective and that is a mark of shallow intellect, intolerance, and disrespect for others faith!

You don’t have to gag another from professing or ensuring the adherence of their religious isms to his or her own member just because you don’t believe in the faith or not a follower of the religion. You are not in the Islamic faith and so may not see the seriousness in the issue – but at least respect those who do as practitioners of the faith!

I agree and respects the concerns of those agitated Muslim youth – though I don’t see anything wrong with what Samira wore. I don’t because I’m not a Muslim to see how ‘bad’ Samira’s dress is. I also have my own faith with its own ideologies – some which does not meet logic, but I’m following it anyway – so do you have yours you follow too. That is religion for us!

Samira Bawumia should know better what to wear as expected of a Muslim lady and should be conversant of the fact that, she is a role model to the youth of her faith. I humbly hazard that Samira is allowing the seeming public admiration and political populism get into her head.

If she wants to have her way from her religious requirements, she may do the honourable thing by renouncing the Islam faith and go secular – until then, she should be mindful of her actions, status, and the influence it has on her faith and its devotees, especially, in Ghana.

Musician, Pope Skinny, less than 3 months ago, said he admires Samira Bawumia and wished she is his ‘Sugar Mummy’ — something he said on a lighter note. Yet, he was coerced and threatened by a group of Islamic Mamprusi youth (Mamprugu Youth Association, MAYA).

“We are Mamprusis and would not watch someone trample on our traditions. We take strong exceptions to such blatant misbehavior and we demand an apology from the artiste immediately. Apart from Samira being the wife of a royal, she is a Muslim wife and her religion frowns on men making such statements about married women.”

This should tell Samira Bawumia, the allegiance her own pays to her and their faith. Big figures in other religious sects arguably, don’t get such support and love. Samira may do the needful. Until then…MOTWUM!!
